Morning Newsdome: What will poor oil companies do without government subsidies

Sen. Harry Reid
>> Republicans successfully stripped the five largest oil companies of their government subsidies by filibustering an attempt to save $20 billion over ten years. All part of Harry Reid's plan. Cue: Evil laugh. (CNN, TPM)

>> Newt Gingrich, who's running on a a platform of tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy, is apologizing for calling Wisconsin Republicans' Medicare plan "right-wing social engineering." Midwestern fools! He rather spend that money going into as much as $500,000 worth of debt at Tiffany's. Listen, Newt, glitter is free. (USA Today, Politico)

>> The Mississippi River is already at record flood levels, peaking more than a foot over the 1927 high, and the waters could last for more than a month. Residents have reportedly gone fishin'. (CNN)

>> Al Qaeda has tapped Saif al-Adel, an Egyptian former Special Forces officer, to become the terrorist network's new leader. Saudi and Yemeni branches of Al Qaeda might not be too pleased with another Eygptian leader. I demand an election! (CNN)

>> And finally: Mexican authorities uncovered two trucks carrying 513 illegal immigrants last night headed to Puebla. Police used X-ray detectors to find the immigrants from countries like China, Japan and India, because how else were they supposed to find 513 people crammed into a truck? (the New York Times)
