Cineprov rounds up 'Stragglers'

Posted By on Fri, May 20, 2011 at 10:52 AM

Relapse Theatre's movie-mockery show Cineprov in recent weeks has not only expanded its performing space and added air conditioning, but expanded its repertoire, offering such special events as The Saturday Night Mystery Movie Show — on the first Saturday of every month, the Cineprovisers choose a movie at random based on choices brought by the audience. This Saturday offers a particularly unusual event with the live mockery of a locally-produced feature film, the 2004 horror flick Stragglers, directed by David R. Watkins. As Cineprov organizer Larry Johnnson explains:

I've wanted to do a local filmmaker series for awhile. It turns out I play hockey with Mike Friedman who is in Stragglers and also produced it. I ran the idea by him and he checked with Dave Watkins to see what he thought. I sent Dave an email assuring him that we mock with love and he said that if we buy a copy we can mock it. He will be in attendance as well. I'm hoping other locals will be up for it as I'd like to make it a regular series.

Cineprov takes place at 8 p.m. Fridays (and some Saturdays) at Relapse Theatre, 380 14th Street. cineprov.com. (Disclaimer: In 2011 I've visited Cineprov to mock the original Tron and The Incredible Hulk Returns, and may pay repeat visits this summer.)
