Spoleto—Charleston's annual festival of the performing arts—begins this weekend, bringing world-class theater, dance, music, performance art and opera to the coastal South Carolina town for 17 days. Although tickets for popular acts can sell out early and hotels fill up quickly, it's not too late to plan it as a last-minute Memorial Day weekend getaway...

Hundreds of performances by acts from all over the world plus tons of smaller-scale, alternative, indie, fringe, family and local offerings from the side-festival Piccolo Spoleto plus the amazing restaurants, galleries, museums and historic sights of Charleston plus the beach right nearby would be enough to keep anyone busy for months. Creative Loafing will be representin' at the festival this weekend, so if you're headed that way, do keep an eye out for us. We'd be psyched to share a cocktail and compare notes on what we've seen with other visiting Atlanta Culture Surfers as we dash back and forth trying to take it all in. Meanwhile, check out our preview story for our picks of what's peaking our interest... and watch this space for updates and reviews coming from the festival next week.
