Atlanta schools chairman to step down Monday

Posted By on Mon, Jun 6, 2011 at 12:21 PM

Atlanta Public Schools Chairman Khaatim Sherrer El will officially step down from his position tonight during the SACS review project meeting, 11 Alive reports.

Sherrer El expressed his willingness to step down during a board meeting last month after receiving pressure from Gov. Nathan Deal and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.

Last January, the school system's high school accreditation was placed on probation by the Southern Association of College and Schools. The system is also been investigated by local, state and federal officials for allegations of widespread cheating on the CRCT.

"I'm faced with a governor who has threatened to remove everyone of these board members because we don't have full accreditation and the thing that's standing in the way of that is my continued leadership," Sherrer El said during last month's board meeting. Board member Reuben McDaniel has been mentioned as one of the likely candidates to succeed Sherrer El.
