Decatur residents biting their nails over yesterday's news that Wal-Mart planned to open a store in Suburban Plaza can breathe easy. For now at least.
Tomorrow's News Today reported on Monday that Selig Enterprises planned to undergo a long overdue renovation to Suburban Plaza — with Walmart as a possible centerpiece. (News that the big-box behemoth was encroaching on the city limits had some Decatur residents — at least on Decatur Metro — up in arms. Decaturites earlier this year teamed up to make a Facebook page to entice Trader Joe's to open at Suburban Plaza.)
What Now Atlanta Blog on Tuesday reported that things aren't set in stone:
Bill Stogner, vice president of retail leasing for Selig told What Now Atlanta over the phone Tuesday their are no commitments from Walmart or any other tenants at this time.
“We are thoroughly researching the redevelopment of Suburban Plaza but have no commitments at this time,” Stogner said. “We are in the process of reviewing our options.”
Glen Wilkins, senior manager of public affairs and government relations for Walmart, told What Now Atlanta over the phone Tuesday there is no contract with Selig for Suburban Plaza.
“Selig has approached us,” Wilkins said. “Walmart is interested in the area but does not have a contract with Selig.”
Interesting to see what comes next.
