MorningAfternoon Newsdome: Health care reform accidentally grants Medicaid to well-off early retirees

Posted By on Wed, Jun 22, 2011 at 1:26 PM

>> Fifty-seven al-Qaida militants attacked guards, seized their weapons, and escaped from prison through a 45-yard tunnel today. Maybe Obama will take the 30,000 troops returning from Afghanistan by next year and put them in Yemen. (MSNBC, CBS News)

>> The AP discovered that the health-care reform bill would grant up to three million early-retiree couples earning as much as $64,000 a year access to Medicaid, the insurance program for the poor. Nobody realized it until after the bill was signed, but that's because it was just too long! (AP, Think Progress)

>> As part of the investigation into LulzSec which hacked the U.S. Senate and the CIA, the FBI seized web servers in Reston, Virginia, yesterday, causing sites like Curbed and Eater to go offline. Earlier, authorities arrested suspected mastermind, 19-year-old Ryan Clearly, though LulzSex claims he is only loosely associated. Both of you: stop breaking my Internet! (the New York Times, CNN)

>> The Marines were one of the last holdouts against the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" repeal. But during a tour of bases in the Pacific, Marine Command Sergeant Major Micheal Barrett said, "How dare we, then, exclude a group of people who want to do the same thing you do right now, something that is honorable and noble," adding, "Get over it" while holding a copy of the Constitution. The few, the proud, the gays. (the Wall Street Journal)

>> And finally: Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas revealed himself to be an illegal immigrant today. Vargas, who left his mother behind in the Philippines at age 12, won the top writing prize for his Washington Post coverage of the Virginia Tech shootings. He decided to reveal himself when Congress failed to pass the DREAM Act that would allow immigrants that went to college or served in the military to become citizens. How about we deport the stupid, racist rednecks and keep the educated, brave, dreamy immigrants, okay?
