Atlanta-based artists Olive Lynch and Travis Knowles will open their joint exhibition, Horrible Adorable, at MINT Gallery this weekend. Their work explores the grotesque and supernatural through a variety of media, Lynch focusing on prints and installation, while Knowles works with painting and sculpture.
Both Lynch and Knowles express some interest in charting the distance of perception as it relates to their imagery. "Definitions and concepts compound upon themselves until they are so complex that they lose relevance to the audience-but still retain traces of the idea. I can only trace the outlines. But there is something mystical in the impenetrable: like darling, malformed, monstrous children," Lynch writes.
Knowles writes of his work, "Humanity is constantly trying to explain gaps in knowledge and understanding with fantastical creatures and grandiose situations. I try to access the same humanity that caused our ancestors to name constellations after gods and create rituals in fear of angering local animal spirits. I assign Spirits to humerus bones and make colorful Mystic priests out of newborn babies."
We caught a small preview of the show. Check out a sneak peak and details about the opening after the jump.
