Addicts of 1980s nostalgia, take note: On Thursday, July 7, Georgia State's Cinefest will present a rare, 35 mm print of Valley Girl, the teen romance from 1983. Valley Girl's soundtrack — featuring the likes of the Modern English and The Plimsouls (who perform in the movie) — tended to draw more attention than the film itself, a Romeo and Juliet-style story between a pampered young blonde (Deborah Foreman with a Malibu accent) from California's San Fernando Valley and rule-breaking Hollywood punk (Nicolas Cage). Filmmaker Martha Coolidge made her directorial debut with Valley Girl, which happened to be the first film in which young Nicolas Coppola, nephew of Francis Ford Coppola, performed under his screen name, Nicolas Cage. I'm not sure what connection, if any, it has to Frank and Moon Unit Zappa's amusing novelty song of the same name.
Valley Girl. 7:30 p.m. Thu., July 7. Cinefest Film Theatre, Georgia State University, 66 Courtland St., Suite 240. 404-413-1798. www2.gsu.edu/~wwwcft.
