Herman Cain's proposal to fight illegal immigration with alligator-filled moats and electrified walls irks Hispanic GOP group
Seriously, he said that.
A national Hispanic GOP group is calling for Herman Cain to drop his presidential candidacy after he proposed curbing illegal border crossings with a giant electrified wall next to a moat filled with alligators. (Try writing that sentence without laughing.) Somos Republicans says it'd expect Cain, who touts himself as a problem solver, "would know that problems are solved not by treating symptoms but by addressing root causes."
Their release is worth reading in its entirety, but here's a snippet:
We call on Herman Cain to drop his candidacy for President. His recent comments and lack of practical solutions to solving illegal immigration show he’s not a serious candidate. Many Hispanics find Cain's recent comments comparing immigrants to “invading Huns” offensive, and also insensitive when thousands of immigrants died crossing the desert. We’re looking for practical and humane solutions, and find Cain’s pandering to xenophobes disgusting. Apparently nativist tea has been served up at many tea parties! Hispanics are a key swing vote, and whichever GOP candidate succeeds in winning the nomination cannot win the general election without the Hispanic vote. Cain needs to leave the field open to more serious candidates.
I should note: Cain didn't bring up the Great Wall of America at a recent Dunwoody town hall when asked how he'd curb illegal immigration. He told the crowd he'd "clean up the bureaucracy that makes the path to citizenship cumbersome," but didn't offer specifics. He'd also empower states to pass and enforce immigration legislation similar to what Arizona and Georgia's controversial measures.
