>> Despite President Obama and Speaker of the House John Boehner’s $4 trillion debt-reduction proposal last week, House Republicans vehemently rejected the big bargain. With debt talks now stalled before the big July 22 deadline, Obama will take to the airwaves to pressure the GOP to include a single tax increase, which they refuse to do. And then the Repub’s stubbornness made Boehner cry. (Politico)

>> The U.S. is withholding $800 million in aid to Pakistan to pressure the country to crack down on militants and as a financial punishment for expelling American military trainers. Hey Republicans: that’s one way to reduce taxes on the American public. (LA Times)

>> Move over Greece: European finance ministers are meeting in Brussels today to discuss Italy’s huge debt and the risk in lending the country money. Italy joins Greece, Portugal and Spain as European nations with major debt problems. The American economy doesn’t look so bad now, does it? Oh wait, yes it does. (the New York Times)

>> Leon Panetta during his first time in Afghanistan as Secretary of Defense: “The U.S. is within reach of strategically defeating al Qaeda. ... I think we have them on the run, and now is the moment — following what happened with bin Laden — to put maximum pressure on them, because I do believe that if we continue this effort we really can cripple al Qaeda as a threat to this country.” Enough with the optimism, you already got the job. (CBS)

>> And finally: A ruling nine years in the making, the Drug Enforcement Administration decided this weekend that marijuana has NO medical uses and that it should be classified as an illegal substance. You’ll have to rip that medical marijuana right out of a California cancer patient’s cold hands! (LA Times)
