Democrats deliver letter from Ronald Reagan to help with debt-ceiling talks

What better way to convince staunch conservatives to support raising the debt ceiling and preventing financial apocalypse than by trotting out a nearly 30-year-old letter from the GOP's favorite actor-turned-president?

Members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus — which includes Congressmen Hank Johnson and John Lewis of Georgia — dug through former President Ronald Reagan's old file cabinets and found a letter the former president wrote in late 1983 to then-Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker asking for help convincing lawmakers to raise the debt ceiling. The caucus plans to deliver the letter today to "each and every Republican office." Here's a PDF copy of the letter that's suitable for framing and resistant to drool.

The caucus members write:

We hope you will take President Reagan’s message to heart and put what’s best for America’s economy ahead of gaining a short-term political advantage. Let’s not hold the jobs and economic security of the American people hostage to an agenda that will only cause long-term harm to our great nation.

If this effort fails (GOP lawmakers will probably just print the historic document and sell it on eBay), expect Democrats to turn to more ghastly tactics.
