Photo of the Day: Kicked to the curb

School starts today for students attending Atlanta Public Schools. Kids, be sure to bring a notebook, two No. 2 pencils and a big-ass eraser. Kidding! Anyway, I noticed these two CRCT test prep books left out in the rain by the curb in Grant Park along with other unwanted items for somebody, anybody, to take home for free and I decided the image could serve as a commentary on the sad state of public education in our city.

Wouldn't you hate to be the kid who actually spent weeks studying for these tests, only to realize later that you'd knocked yourself out for nothing, that the only answers that counted were the ones the teachers filled in after you left the building? Excuse me for making light of a situation that borders on the surreal — consider it a defense against grim reality. Things will get very serious soon enough, as school administrators begin to get fitted for their prison scrubs.

By the way, I walked by a few minutes later and the chair in the foreground had already been carried away. The books hadn't budged.
