It took a moment of discussion and debate between the two regular symphony-goers sitting next to me at last night's premiere of “Maa” before they accepted that the Robert Spano who appeared in the show was the same man as the Atlanta Symphony conductor they'd known for years. Spano is called on to do a great deal in gloATL's new production of the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho's ballet. He conducts both movement and sound (barefoot no less), interacts with dancers, moves across the stage. His concentration and understanding are intense, a revelation, and the space itself has undergone a revealing transformation, as well: sound boards have been removed to reveal the back wall, grass planted on the stage, spectators surround the dancers in the round, Sonic Generator's performance of the piece is smart and compelling, almost harrowing, and gloATL's dance is of a quality you would expect on a major international scene.
It's crazy that artists, dancers, and musicians would create all this and then have it last for such a brief time, but it seems even crazier that anyone in Atlanta might consider missing it. If you weren't there last night, drop your plans tonight. There is only one more performance of “Maa” tonight, Saturday, September 10, at 8 pm. Do not miss it. Tickets start at $25, but you can buy them for 50% off on-line using the coupon code GLOSCOUT.
