
>> Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the 24-year-old Nigerian failed "Underwear Bomber" on a Christmas 2009 flight, surprised a Detroit federal court today when he plead guilty to eight crimes, including attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. He joins another al Qaeda defendant, Zacarias Moussaoui, in entering a guilty plea. I'm sure a resourceful young man like Abdulmutallab will find more chances for delusional martyrdom in the future. >> Israel has reached a deal with Hamas for the return of soldier Gilad Shalit, who has been held in Gaza since 2006: 1,027 Palestinian prisoners for one Israeli soldier. Israeli needs to work on its negotiation skills. (the New York Times)
>> Senate Republicans as well as a pair of Democrats voted against President Obama's $447 billion jobs plan, which needed 60 votes to pass. Obama will now break up the bill and "challenge Republicans to reject each [proposal] individually." Then they'll see! Not. (the Washington Post)
>> And finally, let's take a moment to look at presidential hopeful Herman Cain at the seventh GOP debate last night in New Hampshire: Cain brought up his 9-9-9 tax plan within the first six seconds of his answer and then brought it up another 25 times. A Bloomberg Government analysis showed the plan would collect $200,000,000 less in taxes per year, but Cain claims his plan had a "number of ... well-recognized economists" develop it, though he could only name Rich Lowrie, who is not an economist. When asked who the most successful Federal Reserve chairman has been, Cain answered unpopularly Alan Greenspan. Yet critics named Cain a winner in last night's debate. (NY Mag, Politico)
