According to spokesman George Chidi, Occupy Atlanta is teaming up with Atlanta Hip Hop Day, a two-day music fest already scheduled (and permitted) to take place in Woodruff Park on October 22 and 23 and headlined by music legend Afrika Bambaattaa.
Killer Mike is among the artists scheduled to perform during the festival. Wearing a shirt with "REVOLT" written in bold print across his chest, Killer Mike said he could identify with the Occupy movement.
"There's not enough opportunity for young people to take advantage of the American dream," he said. He also expressed surprise that more everyday Atlantans weren't participating in the demonstration (about 50 tents are set up at the moment). He said he wanted to challenge more people to get on board, although a recording deadline — his album is due on Monday, he said — would prevent him from frequenting the park with any regularity.
Important to note: the festival takes place several days after the deadline Mayor Kasim Reed set for protestors to vacate the park. The message appears to be, "We're not going anywhere."
