Surprise! Atlanta schools keep accreditation

Posted By on Tue, Nov 1, 2011 at 7:03 PM

It was supposed to be a nail-biter, with well-placed folks saying publicly they couldn't predict how it'd turn out. But, c'mon. Did anyone honestly believe that the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools would really yank Atlanta Public Schools' accreditation?

Yes, at one point that seemed like a danger, back when Khaatim El had unseated Chamber of Commerce darling LaChandra Butler Burks as APS board chairman and SACS CEO Mark Elgart was threatening accreditation loss seemingly to pressure El to step aside.

But, of course, El did step aside — all the way to New Jersey — and the board has behaved itself since.

So I can't say the news today that Atlanta is keeping its accreditation came as a shock. But I'm also not surprised that Elgar is keeping his hand in the game by placing the system on "advisement" status. The real test will come after an El replacement is elected next Tuesday and we find out whether that person is willing to play ball.
