In addition to being able to vote themselves a six-pack on Sunday, some Atlanta voters in next Tuesday's special election will get to decide their next Atlanta school board member, to fill the unexpired term left by the resignation of short-lived board Chairman Khaatim El in July.

The open seat is for District 2, which covers much of west Atlanta. Why anyone would want this job after all the crap that's hit the fan this last year we can't imagine, but at any rate, here's a rundown of the candidates:

Byron Amos is a graduate of Washington high school and claims 20 years of experience in community organizing. He's president of the Bethune Elementary School PTA. He's also worked in the music industry, notably as former vice president of UGK records, where he faced controversy over rap lyrics, and was featured in a video giving a birthday shout-out to a rap artist. His hip-hop association has caused the Atlanta Teachers Association to pull its support. Currently, he is CEO of Capacity Builders Inc., a non-profit, community-building organization in Vine City. He previously ran for this post in 2005.

Michael Jeter is also a Washington H.S. grad and has served five years as PTA president at JFK Middle School, where he also served on an advisory council. He cites further community involvement as committee chair for a Neighborhood Planning Unit, a position on a Restorative Justice Board and work with the Atlanta Development Authority board. His business experience includes owning and operating Gordon's Body Shop. Before you cast your vote, you might want to take a look at the flashy picture on his campaign webpage.
