>> Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou is expected to resign following his country's economic crisis and appoint former European Central Bank deputy head Lucas Papademos to lead the interim government. The country will run out of money next month and Papademos will push through the bailout. Ghia'-chara', sucker! (Reuters)
>> The U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency reports that Iran is on the verge of becoming a nuclear state: "Intelligence ... shows that Iran's government has mastered critical steps needed to build a nuclear weapon, receiving assistance from foreign scientists to overcome key technical hurdles." Took 'em long enough. (the Washington Post)
>> Thousands gathered at the White House yesterday, exactly one year before the 2012 presidential election, to protest the 1,700-mile Keystone XL oil pipeline planned for America's heartland. The pipeline perpetuates our dependency on oil and could also be a terrorist target. Worse, it's ugly. (USA Today)
>> And finally: Occupy Wall Street passed a motion to spend $19,200 on 20 large tents to brave the winter. The tents are in violation of the private park owners' rules, but so far Zuccotti Park officials have not made any real efforts to block them. I wonder if those tents will have a cable hook-up. The whole baby boomer and 1960s "let's make the world a better place" mentality seems to have worked out great for the country. They just conveniently left off the last part of "for me, me, me and nobody else".
"American households run by someone 65 or older are 47 times wealthier than those run by 35 or younger, 20 times the rate of 25 years ago."
That's why our brilliant leaders gave them free pills while we're drowning in debt.
Herman Cain on Jimmy Kimmel tonight. What what what?
"That's why our brilliant leaders gave them free pills while we're drowning in debt."
dave's just jealous that he's still a few years shy of scoring free government narcotics
you have to work for your fix, lazy ass
I just hope boner pills are covered so I can keep up with the the young chicks I'm harassing.
Free pills for old people was one of the reasons Dubya caught unmerciful hell from his right flank during his second term. Really stupid idea. They're the richest demographic. How did this make any sense?
It's because they are organized and vote in large numbers. In that sense, young people are screwing themselves with their apathy.
"How did this make any sense?"
it makes plenty of sense to people who understand how averages work
as in on average, old people have money. a large portion of them are in poverty as well
It's because the older generations weren't faced with half as competitive an environment or half as poor of an education system as we have today.
It used to be the case that you could find a decent (relatively speaking) job with a high school degree, that would allow to work 9-5, collect a paycheck, and ease into retirement. Not so much anymore. Now that labor is cheaper abroad, and the more specialized tasks - banking, engineering, IT, etc. - are being outsourced, either overseas, or to more deserving immigrants.
Of course, instead of realizing that the environment is different, and acting to upgrade their education and skills, a lot of the younger populations now just want to sit in a park and hold hands.
@mk777 - you said it. The children of the 60's completely abandoned their ways and took the whole country with them. Who runs the corporations that send our jobs off shores? The same people that were "fighting the man" 5 years ago.
@AA - excellent point about how the older generation had it easier back then. Of course, that older generation is the same group that is fucking the rest of us nowadays. In the 60's things were actually made in America. Now they are not. I can't blame the younger population for this fact. In fact, given that we actually don't do anything here anymore except give our jobs away, I don't think there is much left to do but sit in a park and hold hands.
Just keep in mind that the poverty line in American is approx $23K for a family of four. Now try to figure out how in hell anyone could live on that alone, much less feed their children.
"Then target the poor. Blanket largesse is stupid...like your average comment."
somehow the civilized world manages to provide free health care without fucking it all up. you've got a very low attitude towards what america can accomplish. american non-exceptionalism, i suppose. why do you hate america, dave?
most of europe, japan, canada etc.
despite a litany of fantastical conservative horror stories these nations provide higher quality healthcare (rated by satisfaction) at much lower cost than the US. polls consistently show a majority of americans support public options and increased government intervention in the health care market
the statistics are out there but you're only interested in asserting your quasi-elitist manufactured worldview so i'm not going to waste time demonstrating proof
Oh! Most of Europe! Yeah, they haven't screwed up their budgets at all. Must be prudent spending that has Greece insolvent, Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Ireland on the brink, and the rest of the continent in a deep recession, at the risk of losing its "common bond".
I guess Japan's virtually stagnant economy over the past 30 years has been a beacon of financial perfection too!
I never said anything about not needing improvement in our healthcare system. I simply asked you a question. I asked you that question, because I assumed, correctly, that you're comment was based on your armchair opinion.
if financial problems are directly correlated to health care spending then how does that make the us any different?
i mean if you're going to go with the most simplistic analysis possible don't be afraid to look at your own country too
"because I assumed, correctly, that you're comment"
your
gosh darnit i thought you claimed to be educated. dogging me for being unsophisticated or whatever kooky insults you've got today lose emphasis when you don't have a child's grasp of grammar
whatevs, this is one of those rare days when i actually do have something better to do than play 'stop hitting yourself' with internet fools
Again, I never said anything about the US. You're just making assumptions to suit your POV. You're creating an accusation, where one didn't exist, so you can argue against it.
Is this what happens when you're a worthless sack of shit? You just argue with yourself all day long?
P.S. standing in line to vote on Sunday alcohol sales isn't considered "having something to do today". Most of us were doing that, in addition to our jobs, and whatever other responsibilities we have.
man you are just horrible at this
like it's hard for me to feel annoyed when instead i feel massive pity
Pfeifer, the only elitist here is you. You won't bother to offer proof because you don't have any, you stupid arrogant fuck. Every society in your so-called civilized world with "free" health care is in deep financial shit.
Now, go play with yourself before your hand realizes how much of a load you really are and falls asleep on you.
Actually Norway is doing quite well and has one of the most extensive socialized health care systems in the world and is a welfare state with high taxes, yet has a fast growing economy and excellent standard of living. It's not free health care that's causing the problem in those other countries, it's IMF loans and what countries have to sign away to get that money. I've never been anywhere in the world where I've found many people who think their governments are even going to consider giving up socialized medicine. We're the only place I know of where large numbers have such a negative view of it. It does seem that in the U.S. there is a very "as long as I have mine" attitude, but it goes across generations, races, religions, and regions, etc. I'd agree most with the person who commented about how much easier it was decades ago. Today there simply aren't enough good jobs to go around and wealth has been redistributed to fewer people who keep accumulating more. When the wealthy get tax cuts, the middle class ends up paying the difference because the lower income levels have simply have nothing left and the wealthy are smart enough to vote in their own self-interest and many middle income voters are more than willing to help them for some reason.
"Pfeifer, the only elitist here is you. You won't bother to offer proof because you don't have any, you stupid arrogant fuck. Every society in your so-called civilized world with "free" health care is in deep financial shit."
actually try looking up which countries are in deep financial shit and which countries are bailing them out and check out the social policies on the bailout countries with money to burn thank you try again
"Now, go play with yourself before your hand realizes how much of a load you really are and falls asleep on you."
yes, my hand is in fact your girlfriend (that sounds gay, cause it is. i jerk you off and you don't even know it)((socialism))
