The ballots have been counted. And yes, the news is good. Well, at least for people who have always wanted to buy cooking wine or six packs on the Sabbath.

Though a handful of precincts have yet to report, we think it's safe to call this one: Atlanta voters have approved — by a very wide margin — a measure that will allow retail stores to sell alcohol on Sundays. Roughly 82 percent of voters gave their blessing to the proposal.

Now, from what we understand, the new law won't take effect until the first Sunday of next year — which is, appropriately enough, Jan. 1. So keep following former Gov. Sonny Perdue's advice and "planning ahead" until then. But still... it finally happened, eh?

Expect details about other local elections in a bit.

The only jurisdiction where it didn't pass was Forest Park. The mayor, a devote Baptist, made some bitchy comment about how "you've got a problem if you can't go one day without a drink," or something to that effect. Wow, way to make a snap judgement about people you don't even know. Oh, wait, what else would you expect from a Baptist?

Ya, that is strange that it didn't pass there. I'm assuming once liquor stores leave Forest Park, or the surrounding cities make more tax money from alcohol sales, they'll put it back on the ballot. Either way, Forest Park is insignificant.

I heard that sales won't start until noon on Sundays. Meaning, a 12 hour lack of booze. That annoying Sunday at midnight cut-off. Anyone else hear that?

It was a compromise with some of the churchies in the legislature that at least those cities and counties of sin wouldn't have alcohol sold when everyone's butts should be in the pews.

Did anyone have any doubts that The people have spoken that Restaurants and sports bars aren't the only ones eligible to make that money on Sunday. Tax revenues that quicky marts generate are enormous and they have gotten SCREWED for years. Restaurants and bars have lobbied for years to keep the whole PIE. Fuck You politicians, the people have spoken !

Why can one taxpaying industry sell alcohol and make $$$ but other industries are forbidden to sell. Do we not all have equal protection under the law, as tax paying citizens. Its over now, these Bitch assed and GREEDY politicians have had their run.

@mikey, you heard wrong — it's actually noon-30. But that shouldn't be too big a deal. After all, you've never been able to order a drink at a restaurant earlier than 12:30 p.m. on Sunday because of state law. If you're like me, you don't typically notice because you're not up that early anyway.

great GOOD JOB georgia you just legislated away the last bastion of CLASS and NOBILITY held by the South, which WILL rise again but with no help from you liberal, drunktank-inhabiting jimsonweeds that voted this obamanation into law.

i'm seriously upset for our way of life, our reverence to God and the state of our society. does anyone CARE about MORALS ANYMORE? you can sip your juniper gimlets and corn whisky SIX DAYS A WEEK DO YOU REALLY HAVE TO SULLY THE SABBATH WITH IT TOO????

now that this wretch of a law has passed and the pagans are sated; january 1 is coming, the day of your unquenchable adiction to drink. WE can only hold on to the last 7 sundays of 2011 as the last 7 days of reflection and sobriety and penance that we as the GREAT state of ga have to cherish.

think of each of these days as 7 more chances to give yourself to christ; that's it once it's gone folks!!! 7 more sundays!!! ½ a baker's dozen LoL!!

to sum up i am shocked and saddened to learn of my state peer's desires to abuse themselves and endanger their brethren and show up inerbated (sp?) to church and to SUNDAY DINNER and i will never submit to "the will of the people" as determined by the "voting process" held here thank you

"...chances to give yourself to christ"

No thanks, I'd rather give myself to thirst. Thirst for delicious, alcoholic beer.

As Homer Simpson once said, "mmmmm, sacrelicious".

The soul of our once-great country just called. It want their innocence back.

Just so you ignorant folk know, the Sabbath is technically on Saturday. Look it up. I'm a tax-paying citizen who would like to be able to imbibe whatever I want whenever I want. We conveniently have something called separation of church and state. If you want the government to control and scrutinize every behavior, move to Iran. I hear it's nice there this time of year...
