Occupy Atlanta to show solidarity with downtown homeless

Occupy Atlanta protesters said Sunday that they plan to show solidarity with a group of homeless people who have set up camp outside a state-owned park in south downtown — in full view of city, county and state officials. Come Monday morning, so we were told by area sources and some of the homeless people, they risk might be told to leave by law enforcement officials. (Read Friday's story about the homeless folks here.) From a Sunday afternoon Occupy Atlanta press release:

Capitol Police are planning to evict the people who have been sleeping on the ledge that backs up to Georgia Plaza Park at Central Ave. between MLK and Mitchell St. They have come there for years seeking the warmth that rises up from the vents, but now they are under threat of being forcibly removed with no alternative provision. Occupy Atlanta anticipates that this removal will happen between 5:30 and 6:30 am. We will be occupying that space with them in solidarity and so that we will be present if the eviction occurs.

Occupy Atlanta held a press conference this afternoon with state Sen. Vincent Fort, D-Atlanta, and Joe Beasley, the southern regional director of the Rainbow/PUSH coalition who was among nearly 50 people arrested when the leaderless group refused to exit Woodruff Park. ""We have public officials who look down from these high offices on these people here, who are here every day, and are more concerned with embarrassment than the people they ought to be serving," Fort told the Associated Press.

But here's the thing: On Sunday afternoon, a state Department of Public Safety spokesman finally replied to CL's Friday request for comment saying only: "Capitol Police have no plans to remove anyone today or tomorrow." We've asked for additional details and will update if we hear word.

Otherwise, we'll find out more tomorrow morning. Know anything else? Send us a line.
