  • Mario Monti

>> EU commissioner Mario Monti will form a new Italian government following the ousting of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Monti’s main focus will be curbing Italy’s debt through a tough austerity program. Just stay away from the heart stealers. (BBC, Chicago Tribune)

>> The Arab League suspended Syria’s membership due to the government crackdown that has killed 3,500 people since mid-March. Jordan’s King Abdullah came out as the first Arab ruler calling for Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down, and Assad supporters have attacked two embassies since. It’s time to police your own, Arab League. (AP)

>> Three thousands Brazilian troops with helicopters and armored vehicles invaded Rio de Janeiro’s largest slum Rocinha yesterday to destroy drug gangs in a big media event. No shots were fired, and only one person was detained. It’s so great that Brazil is thinking of the poor slums now that the World Cup will be there in 2014. (Reuters)

>> During the 2008 financial crisis, Republican Rep. Spencer Bachus reportedly bought stocks based on House Financial Service Committee briefings, which he is now a chair. John Boehner bought insurance stock during the health care debate while he was fighting against the public option. And Nancy Pelosi bought 5,000 shares of Visa stock while credit-card legislation was pending in Congress. While congressmen profiting from insider information isn’t illegal, I can’t wait for the 99% to hear about this. (CBS)

>> And finally: Republican candidates one-upped each others’ war campaigning at the GOP debate in South Carolina this weekend, with Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain and Rick Perry saying they would reinstate waterboarding. Mitt Romney said that if Obama’s reelected, “Iran will have a nuclear weapon,” and Rick Perry said that the foreign aid budget “will start at zero dollars” despite Israel being funded at “some substantial level.” Make sense of this nonsense, imaginary wife Gloria Cain.
