A photographer chases after the Dance Truck

Posted by Andrew Alexander on Wed, Nov 16, 2011 at 12:33 PM

Photographer Bobbi Jo Brooks says she's been intrigued by the idea of Atlanta's Dance Truck since its inception two years ago. “I was immediately hooked on photographing dance,” she says about her first experience of the upstart Atlanta arts organization that uses the back of a truck as an inexpensive mobile venue for presenting the city's emerging contemporary dancers and choreographers. Although dance and trucks were both outside her usual roster of professional portraits and photojournalism, she became fascinated with the idea of documenting the dancers and the Truck's appearances. “It was the drive home from that first show, when I began thinking about the concepts which would later become this series of photographs.”

Brooks' abstract photographs of the Dance Truck and its dancers will be exhibited in a show titled Portraits of Mystery: The Human Form in Motion which opens this Friday evening, November 18, at 6:30 pm. The evening includes an artist's talk at 7:15 pm and a performance by the band The New Empires at 8 pm. The show takes place at the Genema Gallery of ChristChurch Presbyterian, 81 Peachtree Park Drive, NE Atlanta. More information at Bobbi Jo Brooks.
