Thousands of unemployed Georgians should feel comforted knowing that job creation is the first thing on state lawmakers' minds, as proven by legislation prefiled yesterday for the upcoming General Assembly session.
State Sen. Bill Heath, R-Bremen, has introduced a bill that would require all license plates to print "In God We Trust" in place of the county decal. The few Georgians who might take offense to this measure could purchase a county sticker to place over the phrase for $1. That right there equals jobs, folks.
State Sen. Barry Loudermilk, a Cassville Republican, and State Rep. Rick Crawford, a Democrat (!) from Cedartown, reportedly plan to introduce an resolution that would allow Georgians to decide whether a zygote is a person, meaning that life and legal protections began at fertilization. According to Jim Galloway, it'd also outlaw abortions and restrict in vitro fertilization. A similar ballot measure failed earlier this month in Mississippi. Again, we're talking jobs, people.
The legislative session starts on Jan. 9. Prefiling of legislation only began yesterday — which means that more job-creation bills and resolutions should be expected in the coming weeks. (Thankfully, not all the bills and resolutions introduced yesterday are entirely crazy — although this one about the "Constitutional Guardian Advisory Council" is pretty hilarious. You can view legislation introduced by House reps here and senators here.)

This is fucking retarded. Is this what we're paying our politicians to do - introduce bills that increase the visibility of religion in our lives? Are there not bigger issues that we should be thinking about/proposing solutions for, than this bullshit?
I think congress is over-employed.
Holy fuck the idiocy in this country is mind blowing. We're following this lead of MISSISSIPPI? One day this state will make it into the 20th century. Maybe.
when will these christian fundamentalist radicals quit?
christian fundamentalist radical = muslim fundamentalist radical
They both want to control you.
Can we have a Gwynedd Blingee, complete with a picture of White Jesus, gold blingy rotating crosses and something with the state capitol building? Pleeeeeaaaase?
Can Fulton, Dekalb, Cobb and other counties looking to join the cause threaten succession from the state? I bet someone could come come up with a nifty flag.
Might I suggest the following as slogan options:
"Don't Embarrass Us" (maybe an incognito snake logo)
"We live in this century"
"Forgive our brethren"
Given that majority of these absurd notions come from lawmakers that are likely 'good ole boys', besmirching the memory of the War of Northern aggression would certainly stick in their craw.
I vote for 'Don't Embarrass Us' but the snake could have arms & opposable thumbs*
*because of Evolution. Which happens.
Every day I ask myself why I live in an ass backwards red state. If it weren't for a good job and family nearby, Caleeefornia here I come, or at least somewhere outside the bible belt.
Atlanta is a pearl...floating in a bowl of grits.
"christian fundamentalist radical = muslim fundamentalist radical"
C'mon man. Christers are annoying but equal to insane Islamic Supremacist zealots who stone women and bomb innocents and run countries with NO civil and human rights? I don't think so. Here in Murica, we can use elections and courts to beat 'em back. Even in Georgia.
Do we really want to include Cobb in our new state? These are the people who elected Bobby Franklin. http://eastcobb.patch.com/articles/state-r…
I love that everyday that our US Senate is in session that they open with a word of prayer.
We should all do that.

Even the faith of a mustard seed is a good thing.
jurban:
Fair enough on the Cobb County part, I figured they would be part of the cause in a West Virginia sort of way.
Oy:
All depends on how you view things. Yes, many of the countries under Islamic rule have much less civil rights and gender equality as well as targeted civilian bombings. Then again then the Christers (US being the most holy of the rollers) are pretty well versed in bombing civilians by the thousands and incarcerating them by the millions.
But we digress, ours is a noble cause; to rid our fair hamlet [aka counties] of the tyranny thrust upon us by our unenlightened neighbors.
Maybe we can start small and petition the DMV to create a custom tag for us.
"Support Science.", "Welcome to the 21st Century.", "Progress is Good" etc.
Not sure of the process but I bet we can get enough signatures.
Pete,
Interesting info: I wasn't aware of the Senate daily prayer but here are some other interesting points concerning prayer and congress presently.
Senate side:
"Sensitive to the increasing religious diversity of the nation, the Senate invites representatives of other faiths as guest chaplains."
Additionally:
"Strictly nonpartisan and nonsectarian"
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/religionandethics/…
As for the House version:
http://chaplain.house.gov/
Also nonsectarian. The prayer has no mention of Christ, and the thought of the week is Sufi (Muslim). The events are also across multiple religions.
The Senate site also has this poignant line:
"Throughout the years, the United States Senate has honored the historic separation of Church and State, but not the separation of God and State."
I don't think most people are against prayers to God or a some form of Supreme being, be he a bearded white man, or a flying Spaghetti monster. Heck, even atheists have been known to resort to it when it all hits the fan. The issue is however when there is a clear pattern of advocacy of one set of religious principals above others. In Georgia there is very clear advocacy Baby Jebus as the only true Messiah whereas worship of anyone else is grounds for eternal damnation, or at least lack of a zoning variance.
Shit like this inches me closer to finally leaving this state. I will scratch it off or place a black sticker over that phrase if this crap passes.
I think it's the religious nut's revenge for losing the Sunday alcohol sales vote pretty much everywhere.
I wish the plate could say "In Dog We Trust" with a portrait of Dog the bounty hunter. Also that zygote-lover is no Democrat. He's just a Republican dressed in drag.
The only Dog I believe in:

Thanks Vox for more info - Celebrate Diversity indeed! I think Chaplain Black is awesome!

Good use of tax dollars employing him.
