"Shine" by Lauren Myracle was announced in the live broadcast as one of the five nominees. Turns out, they meant to say "Chime" by Franny Billingsley. A original stop-gap solution temporarily expanded the list to six to include both the intended nominee and the Trojan Horse, before the organization ultimately withdrew "Shine" from consideration and winnowed the list down to the rightful five.
When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the short list for the 2011 Documentary Oscar, I had my own personal National Book Award moment.
While most folks browsed the list, and started raising bloody murder over the omissions (The Interrupters, Senna and Werner Herzog's Into the Abyss are atop the snub list), my jaw dropped as I browsed the fifteen titles:
Battle for Brooklyn
Bill Cunningham New York
Hell and Back Again
If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front
The Loving Story
Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory
Semper Fi: Always Faithful
Sing Your Song
Under Fire: Journalists in Combat
We Were Here
Hold on....Undefeated? Really?!?! The "Go Sarah Go!" "doc" that I promised never to write about again?
As improbable as this seemed, if history has taught me anything, it's that the Academy is capable of nominating anyone.
Fortunately, we live in the information age.
A quick Google Search set my mind at ease.
Alas, Undefeated (not THE Undefeated) is "an inspiring and moving documentary about the Manassas Tigers' quest to win the first playoff game in the Memphis HIgh school's 110 year history." coming soon to a theatre near us courtesy of Weinstein Company.
I know that I should have known better.
Receiving an actual nomination would have put Sarah Palin's "perfect" record on the line.
