Herman Cain, the former pizza CEO and talk radio host whose bid to become the GOP presidential nominee faced challenges after a woman claimed she had an affair with the candidate, said today that he was putting his campaign on hold. But from the sound of his speech, his journey to the White House is over.
"As of today, with a lot of prayer and soul searching, I am suspending my presidential campaign because of the continued distraction, the continued hurt caused on me and my family," Cain told supporters outside what was to become his Atlanta headquarters off I-285 as his wife, Gloria, stood nearby.
He continued: "When I went through this reassessment of the impact on my family, the impact on you, my supporters, as well as the impact on the ability to continue to raise the necessary funds to be competitive, we had to come to this conclusion. We had to come to this conclusion that it'd be best to suspend this campaign."
Cain, who was embraced by some supporters despite having never served in elected office, was one of the first candidates to enter the race. As more candidates began to enter the race, however, he soon found himself crowded out. Cain suffered from a series of gaffes, including fumbling on foreign policy. Reports of past allegations of sexual harassment as the president of the National Restaurant Association, which he denied, increased scrutiny on his candidacy. A metro Atlanta woman's claims that she and Cain carried on a 13-year affair — which he also denied — seemed to be the final blow the campaign could withstand.
"I'm at peace with my God," he said. "I'm at peace with my wife. And she's at peace with me. I'm at peace with my family and I'm at peace with myself."
He announced that he's pursuing "Plan B" and launching a website, CainSolutions, where he will promote his initiatives. Cain added that he'd be making a presidential endorsement in the near future.
And he capped the carnival-like event off with a quote from a Pokemon film.

herman cain is an egomaniac. at least he got what he wanted out of this fool's errand: more publicity and a larger audience for his trite bullshit
I'm going to miss this guy. His brand of ignorance was funny...it was entertaining. The rest of the Repubs are just disingenuous (which isn't funny at all) or that yawn-inducing brand of stupid.
Too bad this egomaniac doesn't yet seem to realize he has humiliated his wife. Hope he gets that memo soon; He'll be a better person when he mans up to that.
Recently I accompanied my wife to our health care provider while she had a procedure. While hanging in the waiting room, watching a Cain piece on CNN or Fox News, I chatted with a fellow waiter. He said he was a cousin of Herman, said that Herman always th'ew down the corporate-donated gag (Coke, etc.) big-time for the annual family reunion, said that, within the family, Herman was widely considered a self-important dick.
It would be one thing if his campaign ran aground because the GOP finally figured out it needed to stop courting the philistines and actually seek out competent and qualified candidates for the office of President, but it merely imploded from the media pulverizing him for skeletons in the closet. That is disappointing.
it really is, but that's about what i expect from politics these days
not knowing basic facts about the world? nahh, not as big a deal as infidelity in terms of being qualified for public office
"It would be one thing if his campaign ran aground because the GOP finally figured out it needed to stop courting the philistines"
i actually don't think this is ever going to happen until our society learns that using advertising techniques to form political opinions isn't in everyone's best interest
until then we're stuck with wal-mart politics where the opinion which is easier and cheaper to manufacture is always going to have sway
I think his campaign was destroyed more by his talking than by his alleged touching.
Dude's sort of a dunce. After he ran out of soundbites & had to be interviewed, it was lights out.
These are the kind of comments you get from the morons who stand in line behind the liberal message of lies and theft from the producers in our society.
These comments are from people who think they know the facts and character of this man. I have followed him for years, not for a few months, and understand more than the liberal media's soundbites.
Before the accusations of being a GOP hack I have to say I am an independent conservative that does not have to be sucked into the group everyone who achieves in life is against us follower mentality. If more of the population would go back and embrace the founding principles of the country we might have a shot of having a true future for our children void of massive, over-reaching govermental control and oppression where they can live the American dream as it should be, not the way we are told it will be.
Liberal media soundbites?
I think I understand the talking points.
You and Cain should have paid attention to his "love-bites."
You know what else bites?
Blind patriotism / Nationalism -- just ask our German friends.

Well said. Cain was too big of a threat to the liberal / Democrat black plantation to allow to succeed on the national stage. He would been kinda hard to demagogue as a rich, white, racist. Similarly, they are already attacking Rubio and he's not even running for national office... yet.
how in the fuck can you be so stupid as to think that cain dropped out of the race because of baseless allegations?
do you really, truly think that cain didn't get told off by his wife for having an affair and humiliating her on national tv?
what's wrong with you shitbags? why do you scream PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY from the rooftops and then sputter endless excuses about how a brainless serial philanderer was simply too dangerous for the 'liberal establishment'? is your rhetoric as empty as your skulls?
the only alternative is that your moron hero is really too weak and cowardly to handle it when someone says mean things about him
i mean fucking really, how far up your ass is your head?
"These comments are from people who think they know the facts and character of this man. I have followed him for years, not for a few months, and understand more than the liberal media's soundbites."
if he's such a strong take-no-prisoners straight shooter, then why did he stop running? if you know this guy so well, why did he wimp out under unproven allegations?
please explain this timeline to me:
-multiple allegations of sexual harassment, with some evidence
-stringent denials
-more substantive allegations of an affair
-he 'talks it over with his wife'
-he drops out of the race
how is that supposed to indicate that he wasn't screwing around behind his wife's back? how can you blame this on liberals? are you too afraid to admit that your golden boy really isn't a saint?
"Cain suspended his campaign because people decided to stop giving him money— why not blame them?"
because cain's supporters have been fooled by the liberal conspiracy - wait, that's not right...
it's funny that he 'suspended' his campaign because that means he can continue to milk fools for donations to pay off his impending alimony
I was kind of hoping it would be a little longer before the Cain train got derailed. Oh well. More Rick Perry please.
And Bachmann!! She's a peach!

His wife pulled the plug. He would have just smiled that toothy smile and kept on chooglin' but Mama said no.
