Newsdome: The U.S. plans to withdraw from Afghanistan by 2014, but Afghan says it needs help until 2030

Hamid Karzai
>> Dozens of nations including the U.S. gathered in Germany today to plan the withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan in 2014, but Afghan officials think that's too soon. President Hamid Karzai said the country will need financial assistance until 2030. Sounds like teenagers that don't want to move out of their parent's house. But hey, more Afghans have cell phones now! (the New York Times)

>> Argentina is quietly reaching out to Iran after decades of frozen ties, worrying the West and Israel as they tighten sanctions on Iran. Argentine exports to Iran have grown in recent years, and Iran is the biggest buyer of Argentine corn, a key crop. Don't cry for me Tehran. (Times of India)

>> The GOP has its eye on Newt Gingrich now that Herman Cain has "suspended" his presidential campaign. Newt is in New York today to unveil his new "50-state strategy," saying that he can get the state's vote, even though the last time New York voted for a Republican was 1984. (Politico)

>> The U.S. Postal Service is expected to cut next-day delivery, the only thing it was good for, in an attempt to save $3 billion and avoid collapse. They may as well start an email domain @usps.com and call it a day. (AP)

>> And finally, in a 1% crash: Eight Ferraris, three Mercedes-Benz, a Lamborghini, and two Toyotas all crashed today in one of the most expensive wrecks in history en route to a motor festival in Japan. I hope Michael Bay caught this on tape. (BBC)

Michael Bay would never stoop so low as to have a massive car crash that wasn't almost entirely (or entirely) done with CGI...

hopefully the four cranky seniors who planned to be terrorists will cause the us military to invade georgia and then we can get a slice of that sweet bloated DoD funding to rebuild our fucking bridges. bin laden is dead now, so why are we in afghanistan again?

oh yeah and before any of you chimps crows about the USPS and how 'government can't do anything right' i would like to drop two facts on you that i know you don't know

1) the USPS hasn't directly received any funding from the government since the early 1980's

2) in 2006, congress passed a law which dictated that the USPS had to fully fund 75 fucking years of pension obligations in ten years. yeah, while other companies are gleefully slashing pensions the USPS has to fund a full pension for employees who haven't even been fucking born yet

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?c109…

check out Sec. 8909a (3)(A)

The United States Postal Service shall pay into such Fund--

`(i) $5,400,000,000, not later than September 30, 2007;

`(ii) $5,600,000,000, not later than September 30, 2008;

`(iii) $5,400,000,000, not later than September 30, 2009;

`(iv) $5,500,000,000, not later than September 30, 2010;

`(v) $5,500,000,000, not later than September 30, 2011;

`(vi) $5,600,000,000, not later than September 30, 2012;

`(vii) $5,600,000,000, not later than September 30, 2013;

`(viii) $5,700,000,000, not later than September 30, 2014;

`(ix) $5,700,000,000, not later than September 30, 2015; and

`(x) $5,800,000,000, not later than September 30, 2016.

if the massive pension payments weren't obligatory, the USPS would be posting a profit. fuck you, congress

UPS's net income for 2010 was $3.5b. FedEx's was $1.8b

how do you think they would be performing if congress said they had to kick $5b a year into a pension fund?

Easy Eric - the Healthcare Law going into effect soon will do much better than the Post Office. Everything the Government gets deeply involved in turns into cuddly rabbits and tasty food for all of us.

Some things the government is good at like taking cash from our paychecks and sending people checks. They are also pretty good at building roads and a few other things. Maybe running a post office just isn't one of them.

But just wait for Healthcare it is going to be great!

you should thank your lucky stars you've got a government looking out for you because otherwise you would have died of idiocy long ago
