Has Newt maxed out? More GOP voters say "meh"

No sooner does a GOP candidate bob to the surface as the anointed front-runner than follows a deluge of articles and opinion pieces striving to show that he or she has reached peak altitude and is now on a downward slide — and other mixed metaphors.

Consider the case of one Newton Gingrich, who, according to a multitude of recent news items, is losing momentum and could be beginning his inevitable descent.

The source of this speculation? A new Gallup poll showing Gingrich's GOP support shrinking from 37 percent to 31 percent. According to the poll, Newt's slight decline isn't due to a surge by anyone else — Mitt Romney still tops out at 22 percent, the others can't break out of single digits — but rather disaffection on the part of GOP primary voters. In short, the Meh Factor.

Of course, some of this is natural. Anytime someone breaks away in the polls, the other hopefuls will focus their attacks so that he or she doesn't get too far out in front. And, in Newt's case, there's a lot for people to attack. Cough-cough-Fannie Mae-cough!

With the last debate out of the way before the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses, Gingrich won't be subjected to another televised onslaught any time soon. But he will be under much closer scrutiny on the campaign trail, so the opportunity for a Macaca moment remains.

The Gallup poll also showed that John Huntsman's support has doubled! Unfortunately, when you're still at 1 percent in early December, in order to have a shot at the nomination, you need your opponents to actually die.

Does Huntsman's doubling of his percentage mean that he's on the rise?

newt's biggest strength is that he's a faux intellectual and that really doesn't sell well among the teabaggers
