Consider the case of one Newton Gingrich, who, according to a multitude of recent news items, is losing momentum and could be beginning his inevitable descent.
The source of this speculation? A new Gallup poll showing Gingrich's GOP support shrinking from 37 percent to 31 percent. According to the poll, Newt's slight decline isn't due to a surge by anyone else — Mitt Romney still tops out at 22 percent, the others can't break out of single digits — but rather disaffection on the part of GOP primary voters. In short, the Meh Factor.
Of course, some of this is natural. Anytime someone breaks away in the polls, the other hopefuls will focus their attacks so that he or she doesn't get too far out in front. And, in Newt's case, there's a lot for people to attack. Cough-cough-Fannie Mae-cough!
With the last debate out of the way before the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses, Gingrich won't be subjected to another televised onslaught any time soon. But he will be under much closer scrutiny on the campaign trail, so the opportunity for a Macaca moment remains.
The Gallup poll also showed that John Huntsman's support has doubled! Unfortunately, when you're still at 1 percent in early December, in order to have a shot at the nomination, you need your opponents to actually die.
