Report: State's HIV prevention staff faces cuts

Posted by Thomas Wheatley on Fri, Dec 23, 2011 at 10:35 AM

Not-so-good news to start your holiday weekend. Andy Miller of Georgia Health News says the state's HIV prevention division will cut staff after its federal funding was reduced by $3.7 million — a move that could "affect programs for testing, counseling and intervention," according to one health care advocate, and weaken an already shaky public-health infrastructure.

After an inquiry by Georgia Health News, the Department of Public Health this week acknowledged that 20 people in state health districts have been notified they will probably lose their jobs in January, and that an unspecified number of staffers at the department level have received the same notification.

The statement said the reduction in funding ‘‘will have a substantial impact on the state’s HIV prevention work.’’ The agency said it is working to soften the blow as much as possible.

Miller has more on the short-term and long-term impacts of the cuts. While you're there, keep poking aruond the site. Miller, a former AJC reporter, helped break the story about Georgia's woeful mental health system. He's since started HGN, which fills a needed gap by covering health policy in the Peach State. Check him out.

Health professionals have known for many years how to prevent virtually all new HIV cases. This knowledge has been widely disseminated for years. So why are there about 35,000 new HIV cases every year? It's because many members of the gay and drug use communities refuse to control their behavior. Until they change their behavior, no amount of money will prevent new HIV cases.

How would you feel if you had contacted HIV/AIDS from a partner you trust and love
HIV is not something people can nor should they go through alone. I have found my love on the largest HIV support and dating site HerpesMate.℃○M~ . To all of us who positive stay strong and need people to win this fight, whether it’s family, friends or a support group, people are the key. HerpesMate.℃○M~ is such a free site.

broch: most new hiv cases are heterosexual women who didn't know their male partners were positive. 8(

@ zedsmith
You are incorrect. According to avert.org (http://www.avert.org/usa-statistics.htm):

"During 2009, there were an estimated 42,959 new diagnoses of HIV infection in the 40 states and five dependent areas. Adult or adolescent males accounted for three-quarters of new HIV diagnoses. The main transmission route among males was male-to-male sexual contact (74%), followed by heterosexual contact (14%) and injecting drug use (8%). Among female adult and adolescents, 84.9% were infected through heterosexual contact and 14.8% through injecting drug use."

@ Rose Mary
I would be furious and would not be with that person any longer.
But what does this have to do with the funding cut? You are promoting a free program.

uh the numbers you yourself posted demonstrate that heterosexuals share a tremendous amount of the blame as well

why don't you have the courage to admit that you're just jealous of people who have sex

oh it's because you're a bigoted moron, i forgot. that's why you're too cowardly to say what's really on your mind

@ eric pfeifer
I wrote what's really on my mind.
As long as those infected don't practice safe sex, and the drug users continue to share needles and other unwise practices, we will continue to see the large number of new diagnoses. Pouring money into HIV prevention makes no sense if the infected don't change their behavior. This approach has already been tried and it doesn't work.

I think Broch is finding a nice way of saying he'd rather want them queers dead just like in the good ol' days of Reagan.

"I wrote what's really on my mind."

what's really on your mind is that you want to blame homosexuals and IV drug users for what is, in fact, a universal public health issue

at least you copped to the fact that you're a raging bigot. thanks and merry christmas

"Pouring money into HIV prevention makes no sense if the infected don't change their behavior. This approach has already been tried and it doesn't work."

actually it makes a lot of sense

the behavior you want them to stop is "quit having unsafe sex" which has been a human phenomenon since, oh i don't know, the last fifty thousand years?

sorry to break it to you but STDs exist and it's always worth trying to find a cure for any disease, regardless of your emotional jealousy against sexhavers

I want the gays to practice safe sex amongst consenting adults. I don't want them dead.

@ eric pfeifer
We aren't discussing cutting funds for research to find a cure for STDs.
We are discussing a federal funds cut for the State's programs for "testing, counseling and intervention."
Please try to stay focused on the subject. You seem to find it difficult.

Living with STD is a hard life for many people. When I found this site H-Date.net I was once again hopeful. There are many sexy girls and hot guys who are seeking other singles with STD. All of them are friendly and warm-hearted.
