Berlin-based, Kentucky-born street artist Brad Downey will give a public talk next week as part of street art conference Living Walls' planned expansion into year-round programming. Downey's take on street art is largely sculptural, manipulating everyday public objects and locations into unexpected revisions of the urban landscape.
As Gestalten, publisher of his recent Spontaneous Sculptures collection, describes his work, "A shopping cart becomes a sculpture, a telephone booth is filled with balloons, and a stop sign is turned upside down. Using elements from film, sculpture, painting, and drawing, Downey creates remarkable work ranging from the spectacular and headline-making to the small, delicate, and almost hidden."
Downey is also the co-director of Public Discourse, a documentary about street art. His lecture will include 12 short films.
Brad Downey speaks at 1037 Monroe Drive NE (formerly Solomon Projects Gallery) on Wed., Jan. 11 at 7 pm. The event is free though donations are welcome.
