Tayari Jones, Megan Volpert shortlisted for Indie Lit awards

The Indie Lit Awards released its short list of nominees for its 2012 awards to be announced in March and two Atlanta names are on the ballot. Novelist Tayari Jones and poet Megan Volpert.

Jones, an Atlanta native who's currently at Harvard University as a Radcliffe Institute Fellow researching her fourth novel, got a best fiction nod for her critically acclaimed 2011 novel Silver Sparrow, about which Salon declared "Jones does something breathtaking and difficult: She renders a unique family dynamic with such precision and sensitivity that it becomes universal."

Chicagoan-cum-Atlantan and Atlanta Queer Lit Festival co director Volpert was nominated in the poetry category for Sonics in Warholia, described as "a collection of love letters and hate mail to Andy Warhol."

The "indie" in the awards title refers not to the authors but to the judges, a group of independent literary bloggers. This is the second year of the awards.
