Keisha Waites makes running for office her life’s work

Keisha Waites makes her ninth run for public office

There’s really nothing sadder in local politics than the perennial candidate. Think Alan Keyes, but running for school board or sheriff instead of president. And getting whupped. Over and over again.

Which brings us to Keisha Waites, who has evidently picked herself up and dusted herself off in the wake of her 2010 loss to Joan Garner for the privilege of serving as my Fulton County commissioner. Another year, another race. Spin the dial and it’s … the state Legislature! Specifically, House District 60, lately vacated by the increasingly itinerant Gloria Tinubu.

This will be race number nine(!) for Waites, who seems utterly undeterred by her near-inability to wrangle endorsements from local bigwigs and media outlets. After finding her somewhat abrasive during an interview for the 2005 Council race, CL opined: “We’re concerned that the hyper-aggressive Waites wouldn’t be a bridge-builder in her community or on Council.” Which really makes me wish I’d been a fly on the wall during whatever exchange put her on such bad terms with gay media site Project Q that they saw fit to use this recent headline:

8-time loser Keisha Waites wants to lose again

Oh, and keep in mind: Waites is an out lesbian. Ouchy, that smarts.

But Waites has nothing on perennial candidate extraordinaire Joe Bembry, a Decatur towing firm operator who’s run for office at least two dozen times, most recently in the 2008 DeKalb CEO race.
