Humphries Elementary School got an MLK Day facelift

I felt a little like a vestigial tail at Humphries Elementary School this morning, but in the best possible way.

Dozens of volunteers — like, more volunteers than there were things to do — showed up to paint railings and benches, plant shrubs, and generally spruce up the Southeast Atlanta school this morning as part of an Allstate-sponsored MLK Day-day of service.

I was stationed in the gymnasium, where the floor was being taped and then painted ...

I met former NFL quarterback Rodney Peete (who likes to Tweet ... and seems really neat — oh, shut up) ...

The media did an excellent job hovering whilst people attempted to work ...

Also in attendance, Allstate's 2012 Hero Alexandria Phillips, a 21-year-old Spelman senior who "has helped create positive, sustainable change in [her] community" through volunteering. The insurance company donated $2,500 to the Beltline Bike Shop on her behalf.
