There are actual sparkles on Atlanta
Welcome to the future, Atlanta! After nearly nine years of torturing citizens with super-neat Flash animations and screens littered with dead URLs, the city has finally revamped its online presence. And in the process, made one of our wishes for 2012 come true!

On first glimpse the new website's a little more organized. And on some browsers you can probably watch Atlanta City Council meetings and other public programming without launching a new window. But we're gonna have to give it a closer look to be sure it's not just a facelift.

Notice any cool features or bugs? Let us know in the comments.

I'm unimpressed with the way that some of the drop-down navigation menus are uselessly trapped behind the embedded videos of the Newsroom page.

I'm also a little disturbed that they're highlighting Krispy Kreme doughnuts a great activity for kids:

Otherwise, it's a solid improvement over the look of the prior site. Honestly, municipal websites have always been pretty awful. For instance, you'd think that with a city of tech-savvy hipsters at its disposal, Portland would have a kick-ass site. You'd be wrong:

Interesting that crime stats aren't on the front page anymore. Also, the mayor's calendar is empty.

That's quite nice actually.

And I don't think it's just a facelift: The Department of Solid Waste Services (which is the most recently thing I visited on the old site) seems to be differently (and better) arranged now.
