Cinefest to blow minds with 'Scanners'

Director David Cronenberg dramatizes a rivalry between famous headshrinkers in his most recent film A Dangerous Method, but was far less gentle with craniums in his 1981 film Scanners. The thriller about feuding psychics, known as "scanners," became quickly notorious for the scene in which Michael Ironside's Darryl Revok scans a Tobias Fünke lookalike, with explosive results:

I guess he "Revoked" his scanning privileges, eh? No? Anyway, more than 30 years later, the head-scene seems to have a viral life of its own and harks back to Cronenberg's schlockier early days, compared to his disturbing but classy dramas like Dead Ringers and Eastern Promises. Tonight's Cinefest screening gives audiences a chance to enjoy the film beyond its signatur special effect.
