Atlanta's dancers have been busy lately, as you can probably tell by the number of big shows this weekend. You'd think that after such a full weekend, the city's dance artists would want to take a long break. Far from it. These are our movers and shakers we're talking about after all.

The weekend of shows is just a prelude to the first annual off the EDGE, a sprawling, ambitious week of dance-related events leading up to a ginormous set of free performances at Woodruff Park and a line-up of prestigious visiting artists on the stage of the Rialto next Friday and Saturday nights.

Check out some of this weekend's shows after the jump and stay tuned to Creative Loafing for more info and updates as Atlanta's dance community heads off the EDGE next week.

Dance Canvas, now in its fourth year, is a showcase designed to give Atlanta's emerging choreographers a shot at creating work at an early stage in their careers. Ten young Atlanta choreographers work with professional dancers producing a great, diverse show with works ranging in style from hip-hop and ballet to contemporary and tap. It's a high-energy mixed program that's become one of Atlanta's “don't-miss” annual dance events. Dance Canvas' 2012 Performance Series "Introducing the Next Generation" takes place on Friday, January 20, and Saturday, January 21, at 8 pm at the 14th Street Playhouse. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit Dance Canvas.

27 is a tribute in dance to the music and inspiration of the “27 Club,” famous rock musicians who died at the age of 27. Decatur-based dance company Gathering Wild premiered the first 27 show last year and since that time the “27 Club” has, uh, gained a new member. Come see what the music of Amy Winehouse adds to the amazing mix of Morrison, Joplin, Cobain, and Hendrix on Friday, January 20 and Saturday, January 21 at 8 pm at Fabrefaction Theatre. For more information or tickets, visit Gathering Wild.
