Historic Fourth Ward Park expansion near Ponce City Market now open

Posted by Thomas Wheatley on Fri, Jan 20, 2012 at 4:20 PM

The expansion now links the Historic Fourth Ward Park to North Avenue
Gather 'round all ye greenspace enthusiasts and other friendly souls: after many months of construction, the expansion of Historic Fourth Ward Park along the Atlanta Beltline in Old Fourth Ward is complete, Beltline officials say. Though only a few acres, the expansion — which offers a nice front door to the showpiece retention pond — serves a more important purpose by connecting the CL award-winning park to North Avenue. The Beltline's new blog has posted a link to a photo gallery of the expansion.

It'll look even better once those trees are in leaf. Spring can't come fast enough for me.

Doesn't winter have to come first?

It does look nice. An investment that will pay dividends

What is this paved expanse supposed to be used for? Hopefully in the summer the trees will provide some bit of shade.

The paved expanse is just the main entrance to the park. Right behind it is a new large grass area

that's just the entrance. the angle of the shot makes it look a lot bigger than it really is

The NE portion of the BeltLine is moving along great, but will these very sizable investments be able to revitalize the downtrodden neighborhoods of Virginia-Highland, Midtown, Poncey-Highlands, and OFW?

The plaza will eventually display artifacts from the rail corridor and possibly from the adjacent old mill

More construction will be started up here in the next month or two with the building of the AMLI Phase II apartments in what's left of the Masquerade's parking lot.
