First Slice 1/27/12: Let's talk about grandmas

Posted by Thomas Wheatley on Fri, Jan 27, 2012 at 8:40 AM

1. Miss last night's GOP debate? Watch Talking Points Memo's 100-second round-up of the Jacksonville jawbone session above. (Apparently there was much discussion about magical self-deporting grandmothers.) According to this morning's TV pundits, former Georgia congressman Newt Gingrich looked a bit shaky next to a reinvigorated Mitt Romney.

2. A recently released 2010 MARTA audit knocked the transit agency for, among other things, failing to adequately report the death of a young man who was choked to death when he fell on an escalator and his clothing became caught. The transit agency says the MARTA officer who didn't discover the man for more than an hour was suspended without pay.

2. In case you missed it: It's Georgia General Assembly season. Here's how to spot the mysterious creature known as "state lawmaker" and their predators, which scientists often call "lobbyists."

Sounds like people should start checking their shoelaces prior to riding escalators.

I was behind someone today on an escalator and they had there two apron ties dragging on the ground and on the escalator.

I almost was going to say something because the first thing I thought of was how you always read about people getting shoelaces or other articles of clothing stuck in the escalator, and i thought to myself...ah this is how it happens.

Personally I always use the stairs when they are available. I'd rather trip and crack my head open than get choked to death by my shoe laces.

"The longest freestanding (supported only at the ends) escalator in the world is inside CNN Center’s atrium in Atlanta, Georgia. It rises 8 stories and is 205 feet (62 m) long. Originally built as the entrance to the amusement park The World of Sid and Marty Krofft, the escalator is now used for CNN studio tours."

the longest terrifying escalator in the world once went to the world's most absurd amusement park

Escalators are an important step on the path to the Futurama tubes. I love 'em! As long as some fat normal doesn't block it so I can climb the steps and make with the rapid ascension.

Don't miss my favorite, the Peachtree Ctr MARTA station escalator. Tubular!

"atlanta owns, if you're on acid"

I am and it does.
