Forget that M.L. guy — Atlanta has a new King

Posted by Gwynedd Stuart on Wed, Feb 1, 2012 at 5:05 PM

Sorry if there are errors in this post, but it's difficult to blog whilst genuflecting.

Join me, dear reader, in welcoming our new King, New Birth Baptist Church bishop and gay-sex-scandal-haver Eddie Long. See, a Rabbi named Ralph Messer came to New Birth last Sunday, gave Long some holocaust scrolls, had his underlings hoist him in the air, and declared him king. Sound confusing? IT IS.

This video is 14 minutes long. If you have 14 minutes, I recommend watching the whole thing. Otherwise, fast forward to the five minute mark (roughly) and try to wrap your mind around what's happening/why so many people go to this church if this is what goes on there/etc.

Because my Sunday mornings are reserved for witchcraft, Satan™ worship and occasionally performing puppet shows for sick children at a local hospital (don't worry, you've never heard of it), I don't attend church with any regularity. But, this isn't normal, right?

religion-based theatrics are basically a socially acceptable drug for stupid and gullible people

really though i think that this feeling of 'holy spirit' is just vestigial neurological remnants of cognition, where said stupid/gullible person interprets sort of otherworldly thoughts as being an actual presence. we are social creatures after all, and are very used to personifying the unpersonalized

this would also explain why every culture has a religious tradition, even though they are all diverse and mutually exclusive. human beings can't help but be religious, because being sentient is to be inherently irrational

anyway it's just a lot easier to smoke pot and engage in meaningless rituals if you want to feel religious but some people like doing it the hard way because of tradition

let's all pray together, in the words of the ancient tongue

I have a hard time believing the genuineness of shows like this, and in light of his hypocrisy regarding gays and his hidden desire for young men - this just smacks of a Brittney Spears concert.

So what is the Rabbi's angle? Is this like a show at the nightclub and he gets a cut of everything they collect at the door?

ah..ok....
For more than 30 years, Rabbi Messer has facilitated inter-faith discussions ......... a popular keynote conference speaker and minister. In addition to appearances and as a frequent host on cable/satellite networks such as Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), God’s Learning Channel (GLC), and Daystar Television Network, STBM has ties with other international ministers including Rev. Kenneth Copeland, Pastor Paula White, and Bishop T.D. Jakes. ..... Prior to entering the ministry full-time as a Pastor and Teacher – “Rabbi”, he was a Regional Vice President for a Fortune 500 company, specializing in Accounting, Business Administration, and Finance.

Interesting from a chat board http://www.religiousforums.com/forum/relig… "Ralph Messer's no more a rabbi than is my mom's cat. He's a particularly egregious Jew for Jesus minister from Colorado, and is notorious for trying to get young Jews to convert to Christianity under the guise of it somehow being "Jewish." He seems to think that taking the same old Protestantism and gussying it up with some Hebrew and a few nods toward Jewish ritual somehow makes it not so Christian."

"rabbi" messer is not a jew... i've looked him up in our books and can proudly confirm he's not one of ours. take him away, boys, and while you're at it, tell him we're going to start calling ourselves "pastor" and spreading the virtue of not eating pork next week. that'll set 'em straight.

Being that I am an evangelical atheist, I have not been to church since I was in short pants. After viewing this video, I think I may have to start going. That was more entertaining than Maury.

Umm, as a resident Black person and regular Baptist churchgoer, I just wanted to point out that this type of tom foolery is in no way normal, acceptable or representative of Worship. Thanks.

That's got to be the most whack Tyler Perry pilot episode of the new year.

Looks like a cult. Reminds me of Jim Jones and other cult leaders who brain washed their simple minded followers into worshiping the leader rather than the God.

*that's* fucking hilarious. I fear the humor is largely unappreciated here though.

What the flying fuck.

I was at first amused, but the reactions of his "followers" turned my stomach. The homophobic, outed-homosexual former human bishop is now the new king of the world(?) wrapped in a fake 312 year old scroll proceeded over by a fake jew.....

Again, what the flying fuck? How is this possible? Why? I smell a cult...

Oh, and the line about the constitution of god? classic.

"oh yeah don't sweat it, i hope that even the most anti-religious among us realize that this is insane and atypical"

atypical of your bread and butter baptist church. But atypical of many of these evangelical mega churches that form a significant part of the Republican Base? I'm not certain of that. Keep in mind this fake rabbi has numerous cable TV shows and tours the country appearing at numerous mega churches.

There is a significant group of folks, mostly white, who subscribe to these interpretations. Though in fairness it is a religion and every one is basically is based on interpretations, granted this guys interpretations are pretty ungrounded (to put it charitably)

I love Fast Eddie's guarded yet watchful expression throughout the coronation: "are they buyin' this? they buyin' this?. . .Oh, yeah, they buyin' this!" I wonder what kind of money changed hands to make this ju-ju possible.
