Handel slams Planned Parenthood in sitdown with — who else? — Fox News

Posted by Thomas Wheatley on Tue, Feb 7, 2012 at 4:41 PM

Former Georgia secretary of state and (until this morning) Susan G. Komen Foundation executive Karen Handel spoke with Fox News Pepper Spray Correspondent Megyn Kelly in her first interview since she's been accused of swaying the nonprofit to cut funding to Planned Parenthood.

Handel, who resigned her senior vice president of public policy with Komen this morning, says to suggest that she had the sole authority in the controversial funding decision is "absurd."

“Last time I checked, private, non-profit organizations have a right and a responsibility to be able to set the highest standards in criteria on their own, without interference, let alone the level of vicious attacks and coercion that’s occurred by Planned Parenthood,” Handel said, “It’s simply outrageous.”

Notice the lengths Handel goes to to gush over Komen. And how much of an effort she makes dragging Planned Parenthood through the mud. You can't lose with that tactic.

Really just an awesome level of audacity. Create a completely unnecessary controversy, lie, make yourself a martyr. Evil genius.

last time i checked, private non-profit organizations were also subject to consumer boycotts, which is exactly what happened to komen

handel, santorum, and anyone else bitching about 'interference' is just crying about a free-market decision that they didn't like. hypocrites and idiots, the lot of them

Amen on Komen's rights to decide whom to fund and Amen on the point of the free market being able to boycott based on a bad decision.

So highest standards is making deciding to pull funding based solely on an individual congressman launching a purely politically motivated investigation with little basis in facts.

Hell yea it doesn't pass the smell check. The septic tank has been backed up all month on this shit.

"So highest standards is making deciding to pull funding based solely on an individual congressman launching a purely politically motivated investigation with little basis in facts. "

it's funny because komen used a non-criminal investigation to deny funding to planned parenthood

but komen continues to accept funding from bank of america, which actually is under criminal investigation in congress

Though its obvious Komen is a whore for money so maybe they should fund the contraceptive side of Planned Parenthood so they don't catch something ;-)

Uh huh....because Handel, a serial liar & attack machine for a particular "political" party, thinks she is the victim, not the actual victim, Planned Parenthood. Hmmmm, I wonder where I've seen this strategy before?

Komen is all about the prevention, early detection, and curing of breast cancer.

Planned Parenthood is all about abortions, especially for darker-skinned people. Sanger and eugenics, don't you know. You did know, right?

I think Komen was perfectly right to consider cutting its ties to Planned Parenthood: their missions are completely different. What Komen didn't realize was the amount of bullying it was going to encounter.

Planned Parenthood has now shown the world what a bare-knuckled, vicious bully it is. It has shown it will force those within its fold to stay within the fold by whatever means necessary. Future donors will surely consider this before contributing.

Um, you should probably consider doing more research on Sanger. Since she was opposed to abortion. But nice work on rewriting the history to include her Eugenics & the word abortion in the same sentence.

It is beyond dispute that Margaret Sanger founded Planned Parenthood, thought darker-skinned people were inferior to lighter-skinned people, and was in favor of eugenics.

Today's Planned Parenthood is the direct result.

Planned Parenthood never offered mammograms, got a *tiny* amount of money from Komen, and yet when Komen decided to take its money elsewhere, came out with the brass knuckles to keep Komen in line.

Planned Parenthood gets somewhere around $400 *million* per year from the US Federal Government. Komen was about to take away a grant of $600 *thousand*. Planned Parenthood and its legacy media allies didn't drag Komen through the mud because of the money, but because of the principle: once you're in Planned Parenthood's orbit, it's going to be prohibitively expensive to leave.

And, in this case, the bullying appears to have worked. Personally, I hate to see bullying work. You know, "Nice charity you got there. Be a pity if something happened to it."

Still, you can be sure future contributors to Planned Parenthood will have second thoughts.

No, Margaret Sanger did found Planned Parenthood-- to provide birth control to women, NOT ABORTIONS. Also, she believed in eugenics NOT BASED on race (not that it makes it any better).

Please do not keep reducing the complexity of her beliefs & position into the most inflammatory sentences you can string together. It is an excellent strategy, but wholly misleading.

It is absolutely astonishing to me that people who seem to have the same beliefs that you do-- who on one hand protest the government allowing birth control coverage & on the other hand are then horrified by women having abortions which could have been prevented by the same birth control they just protested. Y'all do my damn head in with your inanity.

Are you kidding me? Future contributors to Planned Parenthood will reconsider based on this?? Y'all NEVER donated. Luckily, for all of us dumb women, we will reconsider double & triple donating to PP. Me & Mayor Bloomberg.

Will you also admit that she believed darker-skinned people to be inferior to lighter-skinned people?

Once you've done that, will you also admit that Komen was about to take a $600,000 grant away from an organization with a budget of about $1000,000,000?

Once you've done that, will you finally admit that this was all about keeping an uppity organization in line?

Black people make up 13 percent of the US population, yet black women get nearly 40 percent of abortions in the country.

A black baby is five times more likely to be aborted than a white baby.

Forty percent of all black pregnancies end in abortion, amounting to nearly a half million per year - a figure greater than the number of all black Americans dying annually from heart disease, cancer, violence, and diabetes combined.

One would almost think Planned Parenthood was part of a conspiracy to wipe out darker-skinned people.

Still, I'm sure there's nothing to see here. Nothing at all. Move along.

Anyway.

Part of the reason I'm a bit provocative is that this place is so much of an echo chamber. A bunch of like-minded hipsters stand atop a midden, crowing out their wisdom and congratulating each other on sharing all the same (and correct) opinions. A bit of deflation is a bit of fun, don't you think?

Besides, the stats on black abortions are out there. Margaret Sanger's attitudes are out there - though mostly tinted rose-colored. What I find startling is that a legacy media which is so finely attuned to racial disparities in other parts of society appears not to be terribly concerned with this particular disparity. Why is that, I wonder?

only 3% of planned parenthood's budget goes to abortions. 97% of planned parenthood's budget goes towards not-abortions. you have a very weird definition of "all about abortions"

also it doesn't really matter what margaret sanger's views were, given what PP is nowadays. the united states was founded on slavery and unequal civil rights, and every founding father owned slaves. according to your ridiculous non-logic, the USA is today a country built around the oppression of black people

"I think Komen was perfectly right to consider cutting its ties to Planned Parenthood: their missions are completely different. What Komen didn't realize was the amount of bullying it was going to encounter."

bullying: when the people boycott an organization you support

"Planned Parenthood has now shown the world what a bare-knuckled, vicious bully it is. It has shown it will force those within its fold to stay within the fold by whatever means necessary. Future donors will surely consider this before contributing."

given that PP easily received the money komen would have given them from outraged donors, i'm not too worried

your rhetoric is hilariously hollow. do the thousands of people who opposed komen's decision count as vicious bare-knuckled bullies too? do you think PP was orchestrating the anger of people who opposed komen?

-the hundreds of thousands of pro-life potential donors to komen who were angry over a blatantly political decision

one would think that, if one were a moron

the point that one is forgetting is that these women are choosing to have abortions. unlike the forced sterilization era, black women now have agency over their reproductive systems. kind of funny to me that one doesn't seem to recognize that black women have choice in the matter

it's highly unfortunate that the right wing set continues to dilly dally in helping to create an economic system which benefits everyone fairly. but until then, it's incredibly disingenuous to refer to the reproductive decisions of people in poverty as "a genocidal conspiracy"

Actually, 3% of Planned Parenthood's "services" are abortions. Mind you, handing out a pack of condoms is probably cheaper than performing an abortion - but both count as "services." Planned Parenthood very carefully massages its statistics to minimize the abortion part.

As for the US being founded on slavery, etc., well, where the hell did that come from? At least we got better. Planned Parenthood, by comparison, has been on the slide towards abattoir for darker-skinned people ever since its founding.

As for the rest, well, you're too small a fish for Planned Parenthood to worry about. Look out, though, if you ever become big enough to attract its attention.

Let's hear from a feminine perspective, shall we? Thanks, boys, for jumping into this discussion/rant, but here is a personal account of the "service" performed by a Planned Parenthood office in an unnamed city:
Back in the dark ages, before a woman could find out instantly (like, within minutes) of her pregnancy, ob-gyn's wouldn't even make an appointment for a woman who suspected she was pregnant, not until that baby bump was almost visible and a fetus could be palpated. That was my situation, but wanting to do the best I could for my developing baby (if indeed, I was pregnant), and not getting help from the medical establishment, I went to a PP office for pregnancy confirmation. I jumped for joy, the nurse jumped for joy, the doctor jumped for joy, and most of the folks in the waiting room clapped when they heard the news...
Yep, Planned Parenthood employees told me I was pregnant, cheered, offered me free prenatal vitamins until such time that my ob-gyn would prescribe them, gave me advice on health and wellness for me and the baby. NEVER did anyone on staff suggest I consider an abortion. EVAH.
Y'all dickheads who think that PP only helps women who want abortions, go see for yourself what they do. STD education and prevention, breast health screening, and yes, sometimes cheering for a young pregnant mom-to-be who wants to do the right thing. Then, go get yourself a life. Karen Handel probably could use you on her next political campaign.
Oh, and let's also be clear on another little matter: "private" and "non-profit" usually cannot be linked. "Non-profit" suggests the organization receives tax benefits from its 5(01)c3 status (oh no, government!), so any thought that Komen is a "private entity" is just plain stupid. Take a civics glass, asshat.
