Yesterday afternoon we dropped the banhammer and suspended the account of one TexGfield for violating our commenting policy. His or her crime? Wasting precious moments from his or her life to type angry comments and troll Fresh Loaf's comments section.

Let this serve as yet another warning: If you threaten other commenters and basically ramble like a racist bait-shop owner, you will be banned. We also plan to act on some of our most notorious sock puppets as well. Now, before you scream about the First Amendment, please realize that we're not going to ban people who disagree with us — just those who can't maintain some level of decency.

We love our commenters. We really do. But if you can't follow these simple rules, there are other websites where you can hang out.

If you have any questions or comments, please send us an email.

But if you ban TexGfield how am I supposed to get my feed of Mitt Romney's unfiltered stream of consciousness?

The First Amendment has nothing to do with it. You're not the government arresting people -- you're a private citizen deciding who can and can't post on your website. Just as I can't walk into your living room and say whatever I want, I can't do it on your website either. You can ban whomever you want for whatever reason (or lack thereof) suits your fancy, so ban away say I.

It irks me that people think they can say whatever they want whenever they want because of "free speech," and that they don't have to face consequences in the free market.

When you suspend an account, why not also suspend the offender's comment history? Otherwise, aren't you undermining your decision by allowing continued access to the comments deemed inappropriate?

"When you suspend an account, why not also suspend the offender's comment history?"

they may not have the power to remove comments. seems like the comment engine is hosted externally. if the CL editors can't just delete a chunk from a database, they'd have to do it by hand. they do have the spot power to modify comments, like when i said [REDACTED] but really who wants to go through and null out a bunch of boring posts

I was thinking the same thing Zed.

Saw SP post this week and was happy to see its maniacal ramblings back again.

Zed and Smitty,

I will fight with every ounce of my strength to protect SimplePete. That's a promise. I'm curious as to what happened to PistolPete, though. We haven't heard from him in a while.

Cool, so I'm sure CL will be reasonably even handed and also suspend accounts for anyone that makes disparaging remarks towards the 'white devils' and wishes harm or death upon other posters?
Right?
Or maybe rants against mooslems are OK?

@clsuggestionbox : might make more sense setting up your comments section to auto-delete or hide a comment after a certain dislike/like ratio is achieved.

Example: this asinine post of mine is judged unworthy by the Algonquin roundtable who comprise the commentors here and it goes *poof* into the cyber ether.

@ eric pfeifer

I'm not gone, just bored with the incessant and unproductive nitpicking.

All for free speech here, but Vox has a great point; the knife does cut both ways. I'm curious as to see if CL truly will be even handed in their use of free speech and what is/isn't decent.

cl farms out their comments engine to a third party, they don't have that power

"I'm not gone, just bored with the incessant and unproductive nitpicking."

sheesh you're bad at reading comprehension

"I'm curious as to see if CL truly will be even handed in their use of free speech and what is/isn't decent."

it's not about decent. it's about productive. tex got banned because he posted a bunch of comments intended simply to insult and goad me, which nobody wants to read. if you want to insult someone, you have to do it productively - wrap it in a post which otherwise has some meat to it. you know, like how you poison junkyard dogs so you can steal copper to support your meth habit (see what i did there?)

I was hoping no one would notice how hyper those junk yard dogs were. ;-)

But seriously, I agree with you Pfeif, about the productive comments and Tex was rightfully banned; but sometimes productivity is thrown out the window and replaced with just pure vitriolic words that seem meant to harm folks of opposing opinions. I'm all for disagreeing with people, but there does need to exist a threshold between disagreements and harmful words. We're all grown here; what separates us from kids, is that like you said, we can have productive conversations, but if the insults continue, then we're no better than children. Plus, it's just not good karma. :-P On a side note, I think I've developed a semicolon fetish... So everyone throw me your semicolons!!!

@Eric
They farm out their comments section?
I wasn't aware of that. That's something that would take a decent programmer 1 day to recreate via an existing template. Additionally the larger 3 party providers such as Disqus I think already have that ability.

@Sax
You can have all the semicolons you want, just keep in mind what Vonnegut had to say about them. (Makes your self diagnosed"fetish" with them funnier/more open to psychoanalysis.)

it's not an IT thing but a business thing i think

i'm not certain that they farm out the comments to a third party but it would make sense given what i've observed and also that CL is a group of websites with various local branches held by a corporate publishing group

makes more sense to outsource all the web shit to some greater part of the hierarchy then have a dedicated server/web/comments section when CLAtl has like what, 20 people on staff?

so "our" comments thing is just part of a structure maintained as part of CL in common. but i could be wrong
