Early Saturday morning, pick-up trucks took turns backing into the vacant lot at the corner of Oliver and Proctor streets in English Avenue and each dropping off as many as 10 tires. They'd then leave and drive around the historic neighborhood to scoop up even more tires that have been illegally dumped.

Today's clean-up, the first held by the English Avenue Neighborhood Association, attracted as many as 15 volunteers from the community, Georgia State University, and local religious organizations. Sophia Steward of the EANA said the group expected to round up as many as 1,000 tires through the day. A tire recycling service plans to pick up the eyesores from the fenced-in lot — free of charge — next weekend.

After the jump, a look at how many tires volunteers managed to round up from vacant lots in the neighborhood in one hour.
