Former partner says Tyler Perry 'Never Would Have Made It'

Posted By on Wed, Mar 7, 2012 at 2:27 PM

Melvin Childs declares his intention to "set the record straight" regarding his relationship with Tyler Perry in his memoir Never Would Have Made It: The Rise of Tyler Perry, The Most Powerful Entertainer in Black America (And What It Really Took to Get Him There). In the book Childs recounts his involvement in the launch of Perry's career in African-American theater. While descriptions of Never Would Have Made It on its website and Amazon page describe it as an inspirational narrative, it has a trailer that's rife with ominous imagery: a uniformed police officers approaching a man in a parked car; a bag of money handed to a fellow with a gun, etc.

Childs has signing events on Thu., March 8, at The Purple Door Salon at Noon, the Camp Creek Parkway Barnes & Noble at 4 p.m. and Bar One at 7 p.m.
