Good Lord, people, start drinking more Diet Coke!

Thumbing through my copy of Beverage Digest newsletter (you don't subscribe?), and I figured I should sound the alarm for Atlanta: Coca-Cola is going under! I could be overreacting to the news that U.S. soda sales were down 1 percent in 2011, but I don't think so. As the newsletter stated:

Carbonated soft drinks, while still the biggest category, are playing a declining role in Americans' beverage consumption.

Some other troubling soda notes:

•Total volume of sales for soda last year was only $9.27 billion.
•Soda sales grew 3 percent annually during the '90s. (Best. Decade. Ever.)
•This is the SEVENTH straight year of falling soda sales. (Falling Soda Sales is my the name of my new wobble-bass dubstep live album, btw.)
•Commie websites like Fitsugar are advocating no-soda diets.

Look, I know why the AJC spun this as Coca Cola maintaining its soft-drink dominance. But that's fool's gold! This is terrible new for Atlanta. If Coke can barely maintain its hold on one-third of the $9.3-billion market, can its total collapse be far behind? Should I start stocking up on cases of Diet Coke, is what I'm asking.
