Friday Mail Dump: It's empty the inbox time

  • Atlanta Hawks (CAW! CAW!)

It's almost bourbon-thirty, so here are some items I meant to write full blog posts on but that really probably only warrant a quick note, anyhoo:

1. I hope everyone saw Maria Saporta's excellent post from earlier this week in which she recapped Chris Leinberger's speech to the Rotary Club about what the city needs to do to become "Hotlanta" again. Leinberger, one of the country's foremost urban development thinkers, reminds us:

[According to the Brookings Institute], in the 1990s, Atlanta was in the top 25 percent [of the largest 200 cities]. In the 2000s, Atlanta was ranked 89 ... And today, that rank has dropped to 189.

Leinberger has five recommendations of things we can do right now to start turning that trend around. Read the recap for yourself. But I also found this quote interesting:
[H]e’s witnessing an Atlanta that is losing ground to such “left-wing cities” as Dallas, Houston, Salt Lake City, Denver and Charlotte.

What did Leinberger mean by "left-wing cities," I wondered. He replied by e-mail:
It was a joke ... hence the quote marks. People get tired about hearing about "progressive" towns putting in rail transit, such as Seattle, the metro areas in the Northeast, San Francisco, but especially Portland — all bastions of the "bi-coastal liberal elites." It is no longer just there but the Sunbelt and Mountain States — even Cincinnati in the Rust Belt has a streetcar under construction.

2. This Tyler Perry racial profiling story, first brought to your attention by our own Gwynedd Stuart, is blowing up, as you can see. Odds the debate becomes less polarized: SLIM.

3. Got a release telling me that Jerome Edmondson was set to announce today his candidacy for DeKalb County CEO. The release, which noted that Edmondson "brings his business acumen and expertise to the help get the County headed back in the right direction," said the press conference would be held at 11 a.m. today at the "Old Courthouse on the Square (front steps – adjacent to the gazebo)" in Decatur. I checked @electedmondson to see just how packed that Good Friday press conference was, but, alas, the last update was March 25.

4. And, yeah, that's Ivan Johnson, my favorite Hawk, in the photo. What's he doing? He's planting a tree. WTF does it look like he's doing?
