News First Slice 4/17/12: Double-check which post offices are open late tonight for last-minute tax filing

2. Gov. Nathan Deal yesterday signed a long list of bills into law, including legislation that would require welfare recipients to first pass a drug test. The governor's office noted in a press release that a similar measure Florida lawmakers passed in 2010 helped that state save cash. He neglected to mention that the legislation is also being challenged in court. Expect a similar challenge in Georgia on grounds that it violates the Fourth Amendment. Also inked: a bill that allows residents of Brookhaven to vote on July 31 if they want to become the latest city north of Atlanta to incorporate. And, uhm, a measure about stealing shopping carts from grocery stores. A full list is available on Deal's website.
3. WAGA's Morse Diggs reports that the city's launched an investigation after several Atlanta fire inspectors were accused of showing up at events such as Cavalia in Midtown and the Dogwood Festival and telling coordinators to pay them a fee for services - or risk getting shut down. Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran says the department supports the investigation, which could take several weeks to complete.
4. ICYMI: The owners of Your DeKalb Farmer's Market have proposed some minor construction projects. Nothing big, ya know, just like, quadrupling the size of the 140,000-square-foot store.
