During her tenure in the Metro Region, landmark legislation focused on significant, long term, funding for the arts in Georgia was introduced. Flora Maria worked closely with the cultural community, not only in the metro region, but in the state on focused advocacy for the arts. In May of 2011, she was awarded The Spirit of Will Award by Georgia Shakespeare, for community building and arts advocacy in Georgia. She was able to position arts and culture as an industry which plays a major role in economic development.
During the past year, she and the MAACC staff partnered with the Atlanta Regional Commission conducting major research on Creative Industry data and co-hosting public forums on the value of arts and culture in economic development, regionalism, education and quality of life. Plans are underway to conduct the first regional cultural master plan, through the ARC.
