Gaga for Metropolis

Few films have captured the pop-culture zeitgeist like Fritz Lang's 1927 German expressionist science-fiction extravaganza Metropolis.

Homages vary from Whitney Houston, Madonna, and Freddie Mercury, twice(!). Check out all these links after the jump.

While I suspect most of the hype revolves around the film's visionary production design, I can't help feel that the film's enduring legacy something to its humanist message fusing religious themes with pro-labor/anti-corporate socialism, and a nod to the dangers evolving technology when a doppelgänger cyborg takes the place of a major character, and wreaks havoc!

It will be interesting to see how the shadow of the "Occupy Movement" impacts a series of screenings of the film slated nightly at Goat Farm on Tuesday May 29, Wednesday May 30, and Thursday May 31 at 10pm, with a live original score by Felipe Barral.
