There’s been little news in the last few months about Selig Enterprises’ plan to redevelop Suburban Plaza, the massive strip mall just outside of Decatur, and include Walmart as an anchor tenant. Last we heard, the Atlanta-based developer was tinkering with designs for the project, which would require the demolition of the Last Chance Thrift Store and feature an underground parking garage. “Stop Walmart” signs have popped up in residents’ yards. Good Growth DeKalb, the citizen group leading the charge against the big-box retailer’s arrival in the neighborhood, planned additional protests. Things seemed in limbo. This morning, however, Theresa Same of the Medlock Area Neighborhood Association posted an update that includes new renderings of the redevelopment and details about its layout. The organization is disappointed that Walmart’s plans now include a Garden Center - a feature MANA claims the retailer originally agreed not to pursue. If built, the garden supply store would compete with a popular Intown Hardware store located just a few blocks away that’s served the area for decades.
