First slice 6/7/12: Atlanta writer named nation's next official poet

As home values continue to fall in most parts of Metro Atlanta, some Dekalb residents have seen a spike propert assessments.

  • As home values continue to fall in most parts of Metro Atlanta, some Dekalb residents have seen a spike propert assessments.

1. Despite Metro Atlanta's crowning achievement as one of the few major cities where home prices continue to fall, thousands of Dekalb County residents have seen their property assessments soar in recent times, some as much as 100 percent. In 'hot spots' where 'McMansions' have started to replace the older, more humble dwelling built in years past, some longtime residents have seen their estimated values jump based largely on the land value — making the homes worth more if they're torn down and rebuilt.

2. The ever vivacious Amanda Bynes — the 26-year-old starlet that appeared in a number of shows and movies most out of their teens have never seen — did what any normal American would do after catching a DUI charge and allegedly side-swiping a police cruiser last week: she tweeted the president and asked for the cop to be fired. This is why terrorists hate us.

3. Natasha Trethewey, Atlanta's own Ivy League lecturer (as in Emory) and poetic wordsmith (as in Pulitzer Prize winner) has been named the next poet laureate by the Library of Congress. The Decatur resident will net a whopping $35,000 annually in her new role as the nation's official poet, but still no word on how her home value is faring. Surely her husband, also an Emory professor, can handle the bills while she enjoys yet another distinguished honor.
