Decatur honors new Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey

Natasha Trethewey, the newest U.S. Poet Laureate

On June 6, Emory professor and Decatur resident Natasha Trethewey was named the 19th Poet Laureate of the United States. The city of Decatur honored Trethewey with a public reception downtown on the square. A number of family, friends and fans of the writer gathered to toast her induction and show their support. Colleagues and peers reminisced on shared moments with Tretheway, and when it came time for Tretheway to address the crowd, tears of happiness flowed as she thanked everyone that had supported her over the years and made it possible for her current success.
